About Us

Chris and Bimala Spencer

Chris is a trained practitioner in Internal Family Systems (IFS), with nearly three decades of experience as a therapist in mental health and addictions. His clinical work has given him a keen awareness of how internal systems shape emotional and mental well-being.

In his practice, Chris helps individuals, couples, and families explore and heal the parts of themselves that contribute to internal conflict, stress, and disconnection. He integrates client feedback, continuous training, and his own personal growth to refine his approach. As a Program Assistant in IFS training programs, he also supports therapists in integrating this model into their work and provides clinical supervision to experienced practitioners.

Chris is dedicated to helping clients cultivate inner safety and live in greater alignment with their authentic selves.

                                                                                             .....

Bimala has over 25 years of counselling experience. Bimala’s work is shaped by both her professional expertise and her personal journey of healing. She has supervised teams supporting children, families, and mental health services, deepening her understanding of family dynamics, trauma, and resilience.

Her early life experiences—including displacement due to civil unrest, childhood trauma, and leaving school at a young age—shaped parts of her that struggled with unworthiness and fear. In her late 20s, therapy helped her reconnect with her inner Self, igniting her passion for helping others do the same.

Bimala supports a range of clients including women, parents, and BIPOC clients, recognizing how systemic and cultural influences shape self-perception. She provides a compassionate space for clients to unburden pain, fear, and self-doubt, fostering self-acceptance and empowerment. She also mentors other clinicians, drawing on her years of supervisory experience to support their growth.

Together, Chris and Bimala offer a safe, holistic, client-centered approach rooted in respect, a commitment to personal growth, and the belief in each person’s innate wisdom. They understand the strength it takes to seek support and welcome every client with openness and care

Therapeutic  Approach: Trained in Internal Family Systems (IFS)

We use Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy to help you understand and heal the different parts of yourself that influence your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Imagine your mind is like a family, with different "parts" of you—some that are protective, some that carry old wounds, and others that act out when emotions get overwhelming.

We work together to get to know these parts, understand their roles, and help them heal. The goal is to help you feel more balanced and in control, by connecting with the wise and compassionate part of yourself—the "Self"—which can bring peace to the inner conflicts.

Whether you’re struggling with anxiety, trauma, relationship issues, or just feeling disconnected from yourself, IFS can help you create a healthier relationship with your inner world, leading to more emotional freedom, self-acceptance, and growth. At Awaken Counselling Services, we’re here to guide you in this process of self-discovery and healing.

Testimonials

"I just wanted to give you an update on me and my life. First of all I want to thank you very much for everything you have done for me! Without your help to get me kick started in my mental health recovery I wouldn't be where I am today, so for that I THANK YOU VERY MUCH!"

"I’m a open book and strongly believe sharing my story and or talking about mental health is the best thing I have ever done for myself! Because it wasn’t until I started talking to you that I started to understand not only myself but my place in this world."
